Nothing's WRONG per se. I'm just startled at the fact that FOF and three bands I've never heard of are in the lead. Are these bands super duper dr or something?

FOF is a worthy contender for album of the year; their debut is probably the best album out of nominees who currently have five or more votes in my opinion. Varsovie has been around since '05 and their new album is pretty good. I also enjoyed Murnau's Playhouse and Les Modules Etranges, but they didn't my vote for a reason.

I can't answer though why some people are voting for this group while not voting for another. Why don't the people who cast their votes for those albums speak up?

I still voted for Cemetary Girlz, I loved their album and thought it was just a well crafted album and the most fun to listen to from the bunch. Sometimes that's just all I need, and I kept listening to "Smoke My Brain" over and over again.

Hey I'm not really complaining or anything, more just confused because I hadn't heard of the groups.

I voted for Fangs on Fur. I've listened to most of the albums on the list and of those Fangs on Fur struck me as the most solid and energetic. While it isn't by any means ground-breaking it's got an energy that I haven't heard in any record for ages and the songs are positively dark without having to resort to goth clichés.

My second choice would've been KASMs, but even as much as I love the album I don't think it's really album of the year material.

To further explain the appeal of Fangs on Fur: imagine what would have happened if Dinah Cancer and Eva O would've had a baby in the 80s. Now stop it, 'cause that's really fucking twisted.

Now, take some extremely well-polished traditional punk and add some dark sensibilities while steering clear of zombies, bats and skulls. That's Fangs on Fur for you. They're the most punk thing to come out of a scene which claims to have something to do with punk but which actually consists of bands with mohawks trying to recreate the success of Cinema Strange and only succeeding at sounding like bad Sisters of Mercy tribute bands.

Edit: This comment is mostly aimed at the more traditional modern deathrock bands. Most of the bands in this poll have my blessing simply for doing something new even if I don't enjoy all of the music they make.

I actually hadn't even heard of them before voting started. I listened to a couple of songs on Myspace and liked them enough to order their album.

Still, my heart belongs to Fangs on Fur.

It probably involved a lot of drugs.

It's the only logical explanation.

Right nw the new issue of Grave Jibes Fanzine is available.
Except many other interesting contents, it contains interviews and reviews of two bands with leading positions here - Murnau's Playhouse and Varsovie.
You can download it here:

I didn't really vote Murnows Playhouse. I may be a dick but methinks that might be edging into self-ownage?
