Any band with both Prurient and Caralee in it does not suck. In fact, they may be the best band ever. In fact, they're my new favorite band. Or at least my favorite new band.

Some of us being old-school emo dudes, we’re stoked on the disc’s presence of Chris Simpson (ex-Mineral), but there are plenty of other reasons to be stoked, as the album also includes contributions from former or current members of the Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Der Blutharsch, Dysrhythmia, Behold the Arctopus, Khanate, O.L.D. and others.

1. “Into the Silent Waves”

4. “An Angel Was Heard to Cry Over the City of Rome

That is the most bizarre thing I've ever read.

Furthermore: VOODOO CHURCH's original guitarist/co-founder, BOB REIMERis back! Tina Winter and Bob Reimer's unique blend of song writing not only made a legendary debut in the band's first release but has also made a strong return in "Eminence of Demons".

Accompanying Tina and Bob is co-songwriter, RANDALL COLE from "Unholy Burial" on guitar, drums and programming. This new release will also feature amazing guest appearances from, DANNY FRANKENSTEIN (Shadow Project, Electric Frankenstein) on bass and the legendary RIKK AGNEW (CHRISTIAN DEATH, ADOLESCENTS, D.I.) with additional guitars. Fever Ray Drops New Single, Releases Deluxe Double-Disc Version of Debut Full-Length
Quote:
Fever Ray, the ultra-creepy project helmed by the Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson, have been having a pretty fantastic year. Besides releasing the project’s beloved debut album, which we said, “boils down the Knife to its purest electro/organic form,” Fever Ray have also dropped a flurry of excellent singles, not to mention some downright frightening videos to go along with them.

Next up on the docket is the fourth single from the album, “Seven,” which will be getting released on twelve-inch and digitally in the UK on October 5 via Rapid/Cooperative. Hopefully, it will get some sort of domestic release, otherwise you’ll have to import the vinyl or cop the MP3s. Either way, the EP sounds promising, with remixes from Crookers, CSS, Marcel Dettmann, Martyn, Nic Chacona, Real Daniel and Seth Troxler.

Besides the single, Fever Ray will also be reissuing the project’s full-length as a deluxe version that will include covers of "Been Here Before" (originally by Vashti Bunyan) and "Stranger Than Kindness" (originally by Nick Cave and Anita Lane). The disc will also come with a bonus DVD that includes all of Fever Ray’s music videos, including a new one for “Seven.”

Fever Ray: The Double Disc Edition is due in stores on October 12. Also, be sure to check out her previously announced North American tour dates, which can be found here.

Here are Fever Ray’s North American dates:

9/28 New York, NY- Webster Hall
9/29 New York, NY - Webster Hall
10/1 Montreal, Quebec - Metropolis
10/2 Toronto, Ontario - Kool Haus
10/3 Chicago, IL - Metro
10/5 San Francisco, CA - Grand Ballroom
10/7 Los Angeles, CA - Henry Fonda Theater

New Fever Ray single: Seven
August 24th, 2009

The next single to be released from the album Fever Ray will be Seven, due for release on October 5th. The single package will include new remixes by Crookers, Martyn, CSS, Marcel Dettmann, Seth Troxler and Nicolas Chacona.

The video is being directed by Sweden’s Johan Renck, who shot the recent Fever Ray press photographs and has worked with The Knife as we as many other leading musicians including Bat For Lashes, New Order, The Streets and Robbie Williams.

Early Velvet Underground Singles to Get Reissued in Seven-Inch Box Set
Quote:

Image
If you’re a huge Velvet Underground fan, but you can’t afford the bazillions of dollars it costs to collect their early seven-inch singles, fantastic reissue imprint Sundazed Music has got your back. The label has just announced that it will be releasing The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69, a box of seven-inches that includes the band’s earliest singles.

The box includes exact reproduction of all of the first singles that VU issued, as well as two that were cancelled and never went into production. It comes packaged in a fancy box with rare photos of the band and liner notes written by long-time fan and Rolling Stone writer David Fricke.

The records are mixed in mono sound, which adds to their vintage appeal. As Fricke explains in the press release, "The Velvet Underground were a great singles band
invented modern rock with searing guitar distortion, throbbing improvisation and brutally realistic tales of life on the wild side. But they did it all in these classic pop songs — compact miracles of raw drive, intimate beauty and Top 40 ecstasy, heard again in the original, thrilling mono single mixes."

Sounds a little too sweet to be affordable, right? Actually, Sundazed will be selling the set for $39.98 U.S., and while they plan to keep it in print for a while, they expect to sell out of the first pressing quickly, so a pre-order is probably a wise decision before the box set officially hits the shops on September 15.

Here are the seven inches you’ll be getting in the box:

1. “All Tomorrow’s Parties” b/w “I’ll Be Your Mirror”
2. “Sunday Morning” b/w “Femme Fatale”
3. “White Light/White Heat” b/w “Here She Comes Now”
4. “White Light/White Heat” b/w “I Heard Her Call My Name” *
5. “Temptation Inside Your Heart” b/w “Stephanie Says” *
6. “What Goes On” b/w “Jesus”
7. “VU Radio Spot” b/w “VU Radio Spot 2”

* originally cancelled single

Esplendor Geometrico - PULSION
Quote:

Image
Pulsión is the all new album by legendary Esplendor Geometrico, the influential and acclaimed Spanish duo of survivors of the second Industrial wave of the early Eighties! It includes nine tracks recorded between november 2008 and May 2009. Some have been already been played during their last performances in Leipzig, Madrid and Barcelona with great success. Pulsión is in fact the album that follows their so far latest ‘new’ album ‘Compuesto de Hierro’ (2003), as the CD+DVD release ‘8 Traks and Live’ (2007) has to be considered as a kind of ‘transition-release’, being a record made to accompany the DVD, and containing some tracks that were in fact new versions of older ones.

Esplendor GeomĂ©trico’s style continues to have that absolutely unique and unmistakable mark, that distinguishes them from later bands, they had a major influence on. At first sight, PulsiĂłn is based on the electronic manipulation of sounds together with irresistible rhythms, repetitive, machine-like, industrial, hypnotic, sometimes tribal, sometimes danceable, that mix up with voices and chants. Some of them are taken fom traditional arab and oriental musics (Mongolia, China,Tibet
) to be later electronically manipulated, others are simply speech fragments, such as the one by a leader of a radical party in Japan, Che Guevara, or an anti-occidental harangue from an islamist leader. But the idea of EG is not to transmit any political or ideological message, the spurces have been chosen for their strength and sonority.

Released mid-September, 2009.

Review
Regarded by some as the U.K.'s first punk band, THE DAMNED were certainly one of the first to come to the attention of the wider public with the very first punk single, "New Rose" released on Stiff Records in November 1976. The original members - vampire elect and former undertaker, lead vocalist Dave Vanian; Johnny Thunders look-a-like Brian James on guitar; madcap red beret wearing bassist Captain Sensible; and Rat Scabies drumming-up trouble from the rear - had all dedicated themselves to music in the years before punk hit the fan. As such, the full-on attack of the original, four-piece band was unique and quite unlike anything that had been heard until that point – melody was never sacrificed in favour of power and this approach became the template for successive waves of sonic warriors to try and achieve. Their turbulent existence would plague their progress however, as the band split, reformed and split again many times over, to the extent that fans became unsure which musicians were actually in the band at any given time. Added to this their unsettling habit of recording and releasing albums under a variety of different labels, all contributed to THE DAMNED never quite fulfilling the potential that they so richly deserved. Success did come in fits and starts though, and in 1986, they reached their highest UK singles chart position of number 3 with their version of Barry Ryan's "Eloise". Today, THE DAMNED release albums as credible as those of yore and are never too far away from a town near you, with their original explosive live manifesto as infectious as ever it was.

"Damned, Damned, Damned" was originally released in February 1977 and reached number 36 in the UK chart. And it still thrills. Its freshness, energy and capacity to musically assault have never dimmed. As British punk's first album it remains timeless. The album explodes with an energy, power and cutting edge that none of its rivals came remotely close to matching. As such, it is considered by many fans to be THE DAMNED's greatest release in their extensive catalogue. Along with the original album, this Deluxe Edition captures everything else that the band recorded under professional circumstances during punk's year zero. Early demos, all the B-sides, both John Peel Sessions, their scorching BBC 'In Concert' appearance and the rare "Stretcher Case Baby"/"Sick Of Being Sick" 7" single recording.

And if that isn't enough, this release also features a previously unreleased bootleg of the band's very first gig recorded from the 100 Club on July 6th 1976. This is the year one of THE DAMNED and is evidence that this was one of the most extraordinary 12 months for any band, of any era.

Peter Murphy joined Nine Inch Nails again @ Terminal 5 (night 1&2), hung upside down like a bat - pics, video & setlist

Trent Reznor & Peter Murphy @ Terminal 5 in NYC - 8/25/09 (via nin.com)
Image

As Kanye West and Amber Rose watched from the balcony (sorry for the gossip) at Terminal 5 last night (8/25), Nine Inch Nails played 29 songs at their 3rd of 4 NYC shows this week. The major highlight of the evening (for me at least) was that Peter Murphy of Bauhaus joined them for 3 of those songs, one of which was a Bauhaus cover ("Kick in the Eye). It wasn't the first time it's happened, but it was very sweet.

Earlier in the set, NIN played "I'm Afraid of Americans", before which Trent said something about getting to work with an idol on a song a few years ago, but unfortunately, despite that tease, David Bowie was nowhere to be found in the building. Now that I think of it, they totally should have had Peter sing Bowie's part on that one.

Trent introduced Peter Murphy by saying that back in 1990, when they were young and just coming up, someone helped them out and took them on the road. Then came Peter to the stage to help them perform "Reptile" which was followed by "Kick in the Eye". Peter returned in the encore to help NIN do their cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls". His stage presence is awesome.

I thought the whole show was great, but it was the final ten songs that really made it feel like there was energy in the large, cavernous room. Basically: Peter--> Peter--> Hands That Feeds--->Head Like a Hole---> all encore songs w/ 1 Peter again---> final-emotional-Hurt. What did you think?

Night one (Bowery Ballroom) got "smallest venue ever". Night two (Webster Hall) got The Downard Spiral from start to finish. Night three got Peter Murphy. Night four happens tonight (Wednesday, August 26th), again at Terminal 5. All 10 "Wave Goodbye" dates (Trent at one point said something like "I'll miss you guys") (which bothers me a little because I don't actually believe this is the end) HERE. Stay tuned for more. Peter Murphy makes a grand appearance @ Terminal 5 - 8/26/09 (by trentvanegas)

"Whether rising from coffins on-stage, driving a hearse called the "Bauhearse," or appearing in concert as vampires, Bauhaus was one of the establishing acts of the goth movement. Their use of spacey recording effects and theatrical aesthetics was evocative of both early horror films and glam rock; they became an influential group in the early days of gothic rock.

In 1982, Bauhaus appeared during the opening sequences of the horror movie The Hunger, performing one of their most popular songs, "Bela Lugosi's Dead". The camera focused almost exclusively on Murphy during most of the scene, panning only briefly to the stars David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve." [Wikipedia]
Nine Inch Nails have completed their four-night run in NYC. Tonight (8/26) was the 2nd show at Terminal 5 and it ended with another guest appearance by Peter Murphy who descended from the ceiling on a chain... upside down like a bat (see above and below).

Peter helped Trent and band perform "Reptile", "Strange Kind Of Love", Bauhaus's "Bela Lugosi's Dead", and Pere Ubu' "Final Solution".

Nine Inch Nails may be calling it quits from live music, but it seems frontman Trent Reznor has a knack for another career: party planning.

The muscle-strapped frontman certainly knows how to throw himself one hell of a going-away shindig, inviting Peter Murphy of the defunct goth-rock kingpins Bauhaus onstage Tuesday night in New York to perform three songs during the third stop on NIN's "farewell tour." Watch video below!

"On NIN's first real tour as a real band... somebody gave us the chance to go out and open for them, someone I respected and was inspired by," Reznor explained from onstage at Manhattan's 3,000-capacity Terminal 5 venue before bringing out the man in question. "I'd like to introduce Peter Murphy!"

Murphy and NIN ripped through "Reptile." Then they covered Joy Division's "Dead Souls" and Bauhaus' 1981 single "Kick in the Eye."

The onstage collaboration follows the opening pair of dates on NIN's final tour, which is already turning out to be the hottest ticket around. Reznor and crew kicked off the jaunt Saturday at the 550-capacity Bowery Ballroom (SEE PHOTOS!) with a cranium-crushing 27-song set. The following night, at Webster Hall, NIN treated fans to a song-by-song run through their 1994 opus The Downward Spiral. Yowsa!

The larger titles are definately a help Ka. Cheers chap.

I rather doubt I shall post much if ever in this forum as my musical tastes are rather eclectic and as such rarely conform to the sort of thing likely to be posted here. But for the sake of it, I shall post the following link to a story I rather enjoyed being half-Scots (I can't post the content of the story as that would constitute copyright infringement.)

Music (perhaps?) encoded in 0s, 1s and IIs found carved in a 16th Century wooden medallions from Stirling Castle have been investigated and a harpist is trying to compose/recreate a piece based on what might have constituted music played at the court of James V. There is a link to a short recreation played by a harpist which is actually quite pleasant if you like early modern music or traditional folk:

ANOTHER SPECIES - Loading... album
Quote:

First full-length album after three EPs for ANOTHER SPECIES: The substantial "Loading" (self-production) includes 18 tracks of complete musical portrait of the British duo.
Erica and Nick Species made "sinister" sound that fits well in the vein batcave, including substrates from medieval torture chambers, stabbing riffs accompanied by austere deathrock vocalizations.
Albums for researchers who want to enrich their inveterate collectors (Purely nominal) with the first of Another Species.

UK Deathrock band Another Species are Erika Species (lyricist & vocalist) and Nic Species (composition, all instruments, recording & production). The Band introduce a sense of belonging to a collection of people whom, much like themselves are passionate about the music. They are from different tribes but found each other in 2006 to create another form that is Another Species.

Another Species were formed from the ashes of UK goth/deathrock veterans 'UNDYING LEGACY' a twopiece comprising Nic Species (composition, all instruments, recording & production) & Erika Species (lyricist & vocalist). The Band introduce a sense of belonging to a collection of people, whom, much like themselves are passionate about music.

They are from different tribes but found each other in 2006 to create another form that is Another Species.
This, their debut cd, is an accomplished modern Deathrock album.

Mick reviews: ANOTHER SPECIES - LOADING

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=23231895&blogId=499901706 wrote:

There is much to admire when duo’s get stuck into a project and Erika and Nic Species are one such couple, who invest great dignity into their ostensibly sullen world, where you pick your way through the disgust and alienation, but pick up much satisfaction from the simple, sometimes compulsive slices of rhythmic life. They also manage to ease a bulging colour booklet into the CD case, which signifies how much they care about it. Full colour, full lyrics. Because they care I have found myself shrugging off the mind-boggling heat of the past two days to grapple with their dark beast of a record.

The instrumental ‘The Beginning Of’ starts casually grim but admirably artistic, then ‘Hunger For
’ assaults your senses with harsh atonal female vocals that you have to get used to, but there’s weird lyrics to follow as the guitars keep their distance sensibly and the percussive touches are delicate dry-brushing. ‘Vector-bourne’ is a quiet horror, intentionally claustrophobic, ‘Forgetting Or Never Regretting’ pulls at the leash with some pushy bass, whirring backing and tighter, pinched vocals, full of aggression, the guitar whining and aiding the song’s trajectory, as though they were a striped-down modern Xmal.

‘Invisible’ lumbers along, and the basic nature of the recording brings the clumping chaos closer. It might seem messy and angsty-punkalunkum but it’s got a shapely idea stuck right in the middle. ‘Don’t Stop Just Go’ wheezes and coughs up an early Banshees lung, then stamps on it, although I think you need to appreciate bleak post-punk to stick with it. The persistently pained and sedentary ‘Dead Man’s Recognition’ is very odd and as minimal as it gets. Dancing like a wizened seer with rickets ‘The Time Will Come’ sternly sets about being oddly enjoyable, comparably frisky, and it’s the comparable shifts which bring out the character in a compressed world of sound like this. It isn’t just a landscape of shale and shadows. Gloom is the natural language, but conversation isn’t depressing. ‘Sinister’ is lumpier, and bumpier, and again blessed with disturbing imagery, ‘No More Of Me’ is doomy and a touch messy, as it labours along, which is a shame because with a stiffer backbone this would have greater impact, the bassy tone almost singsong.

With ‘Dark Room’ the mood develops in a more complicated direction, the vocals refined into a cosmopolitan spell, the music oozing out eerily and fans of La Peste Negre or Quidam will be into this. ‘Diseased Mind’ floats on a bass tic, slumping rhythm splashes and nervy synth behind the haughty vocal presence. It rolls on musically, gathering more dust and resonance. ‘(I Don’t Want To Be)’ ups the punky lunacy scale a touch, rustling and shuffling all puffed up, declaiming hotly, with ‘Existence’ in even greater turmoil. ‘Dragged Under’ gets a slinky rhythm mooching through its peaky asphyxiation. ‘Phobia’ is open and purring, and they should throw more of this fluid simplicity into their work because it brings it naturally into life instead of the listener slowly submerging into a world of pain. In repose ‘Unreflected Love’ is their most interesting piece, stretched out and agonised but filled with attractive fleeting touches, before we drift off with ‘In a Trance’, a sombre delicacy.

Now unremitting misery either appeals ore it doesn’t, but for those who get it as a contemplative backdrop this takes some beating at the moment due to the basic nature of everything, and the fact there are different, noticeable stages it goes through ,indicating that compositional strength exerts a healthy effect. Inject some more potent urgency next time and they’ll be onto a winning streak.

There is a lot of changes in the All Living Fear world, the first thing is that long term vocalist Andrew Racher has left the band.

We have all been working on what to do next, and at the moment Matthew has taken on the task of vocalist for the time being. With this change we also welcome the addition of Niall Parker on Bass, whom originally worked with the band on the artwork of the Into The Light album in 1998.

Recently Matthew and Niall played a very successful acoustic show in ....Exeter.... in attendance were former members of The Cure and The Mission.

Nevla and Steve Williams will be carrying on playing guitar for the band. Paul Roe and Matthew will still continue to work together, specifically on some new Corrosion material as well as Corrosion live dates.

As for the future of the band, well at the moment All Living Fear will very much focus the attention on live performance, there is no plan to release any new recordings.

Matthew is working on new material that he plans to release as an album under his own name.

The new All Living Fear Live in Concert DVD is out now, it was professional filmed at the ....Whitby.... festival we hope you enjoy this DVD.

We are also going on tour at the end of the year and are taking in the north of ..England.. and ....Scotland...., this will be a full electric tour the first tour that the band has taken since 1998.

Best wishes from All Living Fear

The Eden House have a new release 'The Looking Glass' in October, coinciding with a European tour. It's a 2-disc set: a DVD with 9 songs filmed at Goldtop studio, plus a CD with five new recordings of interesting covers. As on their debut album 'Smoke & Mirrors', it features a number of female singers: Julianne Regan, Evi Vine and Amandine Ferrari, plus new guest vocalist: Tallulah Rendell.

This is the first release to feature Andy Jackson on guitar (he's Pink Floyd's twice Grammy nominated recording engineer), alongside Bob Loveday on violin (of Van Morrison and Bob Geldof's bands), Simon Rippin on drums (ex NFD and Nefilim), and the core duo of guitarist Steve Carey ( Adoration/This Burning Effigy) and bassist Tony Pettitt ( Fields of the Nephilim).

The new tracks on the mini-album are: Remember (Walking In The Sand) [Shangri-Las], Street Spirit [Radiohead], Play Dead [Bjork], Venus In Furs [Velvet Underground], and 2000 Light Years From Home [Rolling Stones].

The songs on the DVD filmed at Goldtop Studio are: Gods Pride, Reach Out, Iron In The Soul, The Dark Half, All My Love, Sin, Fire For You, Trashed Treasure and Play Dead. The soundtrack has been remixed at Pink Floyd's studio, you can see four tracks with an earlier mix at their Youtube channel.

Crass: There Is No Authority But Yourself (English w/ Dutch Subtitles)
Quote:
There is No Authority But Yourself is a Dutch film documenting the history of anarchist punk band Crass. The 'anarcho-punk' band Crass never compromised, was very political and never had faked some sort of appearance. They were honest. Real. And extremely popular. Some of the members are still living together in Dial House, a quiet place in the countryside just outside London. 'Permaculture' workshops ('living ecologically and sustainable') are organized there. Penny Rimbaud (drummer) en Gee Vaucher (art works) are still living up to Crass' ideals. They are trying to live an authentic life 'outside the framework'.

Trailer for "Killing Joke: The Death and Resurrection Show"
Quote:
The trailer has been posted a new documentary about Killing Joke. The film was put together by New Zealand's ILC Productions, Jaz Coleman and British independent Coffee Films. The producers explained the film:
It follows Czech journalist Jana Trzilova's investigation into the turbulent musical history of the band that influenced Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, Soundgarden, Korn, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Faith No More, The Cult and many more. Jana follows the trail of Killing Joke and charismatic frontman Jaz Coleman from Czechoslavakia to Iona and on to Glastonbury Tor, Egypt, Iceland, the Nazca Lines in Peru and New Zealand. Discovering a web of mysticism, numerology, white heat experiments, a recording session in the heart of the Great Pyramid, occult rituals and prophecy she discovers more than she ever imagined.

A former keyboard player with Echo and the Bunnymen has been killed in a motorbike crash on the Isle of Man.
Jake Brockman, who was 53 and married, lived in Bristol. He died when his bike was in collision with a converted ambulance near Kirk Michael on Tuesday.
Known to fans as the "Fifth Bunnyman", he had been associated with the Liverpool band since its 80s heyday and became a full-time member in 1989.
In 1989 the band's first drummer Pete De Freitas died in a similar crash.
'Invariably seasick'
A spokesman for the Isle of Man Police confirmed Mr Brockman's death.
In a statement, his family and wife Sally Mundy said: "Jake was always a classic bike enthusiast, he loved sailing though he was invariably seasick.
"Music was central to Jake's life."
Mr Brockman formed the dance band BOM with Bristol-based musician Damon Reece.
He also worked as a sound recordist for the BBC's natural history unit on several projects.
Mr Brockman, who was born in Borneo, studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
The band has paid tribute to Mr Brockman on its official website.
He was was riding along the Kirk Michael to Ballaugh Road on Tuesday evening when the accident happened.
Mr Brockman was taken to Noble's Hospital but died from his injuries a few hours later.
Investigations into the crash are continuing.

SOCIOPHOBIA is the solo project of Nightchild A. (The NIGHTCHILD) where he plays modern deathrock (or deathrock revival).

Project was started in August 2008 with purpose not to mix up and deathrock goth rock musical creativities of Nightchild A in one band.

In winter 2008 the first mini-LP "Nonsense" was recorded.
Before it the song "Waxworks" was issued at Sacratum magazine compilation in 2008.

The music of the project is a mixture of old school deathrock, deathrock revival, and with elements of cold wave. Lyrical themes are inspired by usual life of society.

Alice Cooper Wonders Where the Balls Have Gone in Rock 'n' Roll
http://www.noisecreep.com/2009/09/02/alice-cooper-wonders-where-the-balls-have-gone-in-rock-n-roll/ wrote:

If you're going to talk smack about someone else, you better be able to back it up. Well, when Alice Cooper asks Noisecreep, "Are all American bands metro-sexual now?" dude can back that s--- up. One of rock's living legends, Cooper has had it with the lack of real men in rock. "I heard the title Vampire Weekend and I thought, 'Oh, man, that's gonna be great. I gotta see it,'" he says. "And there are these guys with little Gap T-shirts on and I'm going, 'What happened to the balls in rock 'n' roll? Why are American bands so wimpy?'"

Who does earn his hard rock seal of approval? "The Foo Fighters get up there and they rock, they know how to rock. Green Day rocks, they get up there and they have energy," he says. "I am worried that a lot of the newer bands that are coming out are depending too much on keyboards and being sensitive. Maybe I'm just not sensitive anymore. I like to hear a band be stupid and drunk. I wish I could see more bands like that were like early Guns N' Roses, early Aerosmith, just snotty rock 'n' roll bands."

Along with his very entertaining look at today's music scene, Cooper filled Noisecreep in on his new tour, the best way to kill Alice and why it's only a matter of time before we see his music on Broadway.

What can you tell us about the upcoming tour?

It's a brand-new show. Everybody's got to remember a million new parts, new theatrics. They kill me four times in the show, so if I'm in the wrong place I get stitches.

So you get killed four times?

It's a four-part show, sort of like four different faces of Alice, and at the end of each part we have to execute him to get to the next part. The guy that directed it is the guy that directed 'Beauty and the Beast' on Broadway, so it's really pretty elaborate. The lyrics of the songs tell the whole story. We really depended this year on the lyrics to pull you through every segment and all the songs. We've never done that before, but I really like the idea. It's like taking those songs and doing something different with them.

That brings up a good point. You were doing concept albums in the '70s, and it seems like a natural for there to be an Alice Cooper musical on Broadway show. Will we ever see that?

I can't imagine there not being one. There's already been talk of 'Welcome to My Nightmare' on Broadway, 'cause when we did that it was basically a Broadway show. The director was from 'West Side Story,' everybody involved in the show was from some sort of legitimate theater. And then we just all put it all to Alice Cooper insane rock 'n' roll and Alice's insane concept of what theater was supposed to be. And it turned into something that nobody had ever seen before.

How would Alice Cooper on Broadway top the tours?

First of all, I would love to see something about Alice, the story is great. From Phoenix to the alcoholism, the fact that Alice is married successfully for 33 years, there's so many things that contradict each other. And after 40 years the band that all the critics said would last two weeks, I'm still here and I'm still selling out the place. So my idea of add a little Busby Berkeley, throw a little Bela Lugosi in there and terrify the audience, but make them laugh at the same time and don't give up the rock 'n' roll has worked for 40 years. And create a character that people actually really like. When I started Alice, there was no consummate villain in rock.

There were a lot of heroes, but no villains, a lot of Peter Pans and no Captain Hook. And I went, "Well, I'll gladly be Captain Hook." Forty years later, I'm still the premiere villain in rock. So whatever it is the audience liked, they liked the idea that it's funny and it is scary and it's a lot of different things.

Obviously for the Broadway show, you envision the music would still all be Alice.

Oh absolutely. The nice thing is the music is built in. If somebody were gonna say, "Let's write a bunch of songs for an Alice play, I'd go, 'They're written.'" In fact, they're not just written, they're hits already. I can go back for 40 years and give you 15 top 10 hits that are already proven. So in a lot of ways it's like Billy Joel or Abba or the Who that went to Broadway. You've already got these songs, so it's sort of a slam dunk. All you gotta do is do something really interesting on Broadway and really make it interesting.

What would be the three songs that absolutely have to be in the play?

Well, 'Ballad of Dwight Fry' because it really was the most theatrical song. You're writing a song about a guy that's in the original 'Frankenstein' and the original 'Dracula' and never got any due. He was the character that played Fritz and Renfield, the creepy little character. I do it in a straitjacket under a cold blue light and the audience feels very claustrophobic. I just think 'Ballad of Dwight Fry' may be the best example of a theatrical song for Alice. 'Only Women Bleed' is another one, it's a song that's pretty, it was a hit. When we first did it, the audience actually thought it was James Taylor, not the audience, but the record company. They had no idea it was Alice Cooper.

But it's a very dark song that ends up being almost a feminist anthem. It was a brutal ballet and it was saying men bleed physically, women bleed emotionally and that was the point I was trying to get across. The title made everybody think I was trying to get away with some sort of menstrual joke, and it ended up being covered by 12 different women.

What's your favorite version from the 12 different women who covered it?

When you take a song like that and you put Tina Turner behind it, she's gonna bleed all over that song. And Etta James did it, too. Those are versions I could never do because they're not even singing from their heart, they're singing from their groin on that. It's coming out guttural, women that have been beaten, women that have bled. So they heard that song and all of a sudden they were taking it literally and I was going, "Wow, I can't put that much soul into that song."

Another song you'd have to have is 'Welcome to my Nightmare' because that just pretty much says what Alice Cooper is. It's some kind of strange, dark, funny vaudeville. And that's all I ever wanted it to be. I always like the idea of vaudeville, horror and comedy all in bed together. And we've never backed down on the rock 'n' roll. I insist on it being loud, I insist on it being 95 percent rock and about five percent ballads. You're never gonna find me turning things down.

Of the four ways Alice gets killed, what's the best way to kill Alice?

I kind of go to my fears and infest them on stage. The worst thing that could ever happen to me is not snakes and spiders, it would be needles. And of course we have a giant hypodermic needle at the end of 'Poison.' And then another one is being claustrophobic, it's putting me in a box and running spikes through it. And it's a great trick. But you have to do this all to music and make sure that it all makes sense somehow. That's why sometimes I have to bring in somebody like a director from Broadway saying, "Here's all the stuff, here's my idea for the stuff, make it come to life." I haven't got the patience to sit there and go, "Okay, we need to rehearse this, this, this and this."

Who are some of the young musicians you admire?

There are some very inventive people. Jack White is incredible, because he goes against all the rules. He makes records that really are kind of sloppy and yet his voice and his guitar make it work. Everything that guy does is catchy. I am very encouraged that a lot of bands sound like they're going back to the garage and they're not depending on high-tech crap to be their music. But two guitars, bass, drums, and a lead singer, to me that's rock 'n' roll.

I do get a little annoyed that it seems like a lot of bands that come out now that I read, "The greatest band that I've ever heard." And I see them and I go, "There's absolutely no testosterone in this band." I heard the title Vampire Weekend and I thought, "Oh, man, that's gonna be great. I gotta see it." And there are these guys with little Gap T-shirts on and they're singing about I don't know what, it was so light I couldn't listen to it. And I'm going, "What happened to the balls in rock 'n' roll? Why are American bands so wimpy?"

I'm getting a lot of bands that are kind of going, "Oh, the summer in the rain and aren't lightning bugs wonderful?" And I'm going, "What kind of drug are you on?" I think if you asked Ozzy, Iggy and all the other people that come from our generation, we're kind of hoping the young guys step it up a little bit when it comes to being guys.

AND REMAINS is made up from alternative mixes / takes and live recordings that were superfluous to the two Omnibus Editions and were offering it as a bonus thank you to fans who pre-order both of the box sets direct from this site.

TRACK LISTING
1. Bela Lugosi’s Dead – Tomb Raider Mix
This is a new mix based on the Hammersmith Palais ’81 live performance (the same as on ‘Press The Eject’). It has a constant rhythm (the live take starts at a gallop, quickly slowing to a canter) and uses a studio vocal that was added to the multi-track.
2. Terror Couple Kill Colonel – Spaceward Studio 24 April 1980
There are already 3 versions of TCKC on the box set (that’s enough) but this version was briefly available (by accident) on a re-press of the vinyl single and quickly withdrawn.
3. Double Dare – Southern Studio Mix #1
The unreleased mix #4 is on the box set but this is an earlier take.
4. A God In An Alcove
5. Poison Pen
6. Hollow Hills
Recorded at University Of London Union 31 October 1980. We wanted to include a live disc with ‘In The Flat Field’ Omnibus Edition but only one official recording was made of a show (at ULU). The tape was a live monitor mix so the sound balance was way out with Daniel’s guitar recorded far too low in the mix. Sadly there were no multi-tracks so a re-mix wasn’t possible. These are the only 3 tracks worth salvaging from the tape. It’s a shame, as audience bootlegs show that Bauhaus were always a dynamic live band right from their early shows.
7. Poem
Recorded at Space Place, Chicago 9 September 1980

This is from a bootleg and it’s a bit of fun that Peter employed during some of the 1980 shows.

Elvis Costello to Release Live Album Series
Quote:
Elvis Costello is turning to the vaults yet again for his next project.

Rather than just expand and reissue a classic album, though, Costello's set to unleash a wave of live recordings on fans in his The Costello Show Series, according to Billboard. The set, which makes its debut Sept. 29 with Live at the El Mocambo Sept. 29 from Hip-O/Universal, is slated to drag out classic performances -- some know them as classic bootlegs -- from the vaults for a series of live albums. Live at the El Mocambo was recorded March 1978 in Toronto.

John Lydon Reforms Public Image Limited
Quote:
John Lydon says it’s only for a few shows around England but as the history of reunions — sorry, “coming off hiatus” — would dictate, small stints are usually just a feeler to see if a full-scale tour is viable.

That’s our reserved take on Lydon’s announcement that he will be reforming post-Sex Pistols, and far more productive, outfit Public Image Limited for a series of shows around the UK this December.

According to his website, the reformation is based on the 30th anniversary of PiL’s seminal effort, Metal Box, but will not be solely dedicated to it. The set list will feature tracks from the group’s other seven full-lengths. Lydon will be joined by former members Lu Edmonds (guitar) and Bruce Smith (drums), with the addition of new bassist Scott Firth.

Despite the inevitable aura of “cash grab” or “nostalgia” that will permeate this venture, we’ll take it. Hopefully enough people have the brains to buy a ticket, stroke the PiL ego and compel them to get over to North America.

Here are the dates, if you find some disposable cash:

12/15 Birmingham, England – 02 Academy
12/16 Leeds, England – 02 Academy
12/18 Glasgow, Scotland - 02 Academy
12/19 Manchester, England - 02 Academy
12/21 London, England - 02 Academy

Janis Joplin Biopic “Kind of Dead,” Zooey Deschanel Says
Quote:
Life is truly starting to feel like an episode of 30 Rock. Like the ill-fated Jenna Maroney sub-plot where her Janis Joplin movie was slowly transformed into a film about “Janet Jopler,” actress and beloved She & Him singer Zooey Deschanel has revealed that the real-life Joplin biopic has suffered a similar fate.

In an interview with WENN [via TwentyFourBit], Deschanel revealed that the film “seems kind of dead now.”

“It’s such a fantastic story and a dream role, but it doesn’t seem to want to be made, and you can’t force these things,” she said. “I don’t think any of the work I did was lost. I enjoyed doing the research, so I don’t regret any of it.”

Among the many reasons for the endless delays are the numerous royalty issues for Joplin’s life rights and catalogue. Maybe it’s time Deschanel pursued a Janet Jopler movie of her own?

Nick Cave Drops Soundtrack for Bunny Munro
Quote:

With The Death of Bunny Munro just about to hit stores, post-punk icon Nick Cave has his promotional game at full blast. First, he announced some book signings in Toronto and Ottawa, and now Cave has dropped an iPhone app featuring a soundtrack for the book.

The soundtrack comes bundled with the audio version of the book, Cave’s first literary work in 20 years, and is currently available at Apple’s App Store. The music was composed by Cave with his long-time writing partner Warren Ellis.

In a press release, Cave explained that the interactive nature of the iPhone app enhances the overall experience of the book, saying, "The fact that the reader can choose his or her own experience is interesting because the true meaning of a book lies in the reader's own interpretation and the circumstances of that interpretation.”

If you’d rather read it the old fashioned way, the printed version of The Death of Bunny Munro will hit stores on September 19 via HarperCollins Canada.

Toronto Punk Icons the Scenics Unearth Lost Recordings, Announce Canadian Tour Dates
Quote:

The Scenics were an early new wave/punk quartet from Toronto who had a respectable run from 1976 to 1982. Their output was mostly limited to one full-length album, 1979’s Underneath the Door, and last year’s collection of Velvet Underground covers called How Does It Feel to Be Loved?. Now, it has been revealed that the band will be unearthing a lost album and celebrating it with a tour.

The album is called Sunshine World, and is composed of lost recordings that the band made on a four-track recorder in 1977 and 1978. The album includes 13 original Scenics songs, along with covers of the Kinks and Tommy James and the Shondells, and is due in stores on October 13 via Dream Tower.

In the meantime, songs from the record can be heard here.

Apparently, all of this recent attention has got the band thinking about new material, as they’ve planned both a Canadian tour and a new album. The tour will see them play Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Hamilton around the time of Sunshine World’s release, while an album of all-new material has been recorded and is expected out next year.

Tour dates:

10/13 Toronto, ON - El Mocambo
10/14 Ottawa, ON - Zaphod Beeblebrox
10/15 Montreal, QC - Green Room
10/18 Hamilton, ON - This Ain't Hollywood

Rob Halford to Release Christmas Album
Quote:
The record — Halford’s first solo release in seven years — will be called Halford III – Winter Songs and will be released through the man’s own Metal God Records on October 26. A press release says that the album, which was written and recorded throughout ’08 and ’09, will include a collection of new Halford-written tunes, plus his take on some Christmas classics.

“Well, I’ve always said I wanted to produce a Christmas CD,” Halford said in the press release. “The Halford band has assembled a fantastic release, and we’re excited to have produced a collection of holiday tracks which all of us have enjoyed from a very early age.”

There have been some kind of lame attempts at combining metal and Christmas music in the past, and combined with the recent, rather puzzling news about Bob Dylan releasing a Christmas disc this year, this is a little hard to take. But, still, the thought of hearing Halford wail his way through “Come All Ye Faithful” is pretty irresistible.

Mick reviews: THEATRE OF HATE - ARIA OF THE DEVIL
http://mickmercer.livejournal.com/975350.html#cutid1 wrote:
Always a band a step ahead and a step to one side Theatre Of Hate were never a real favourite of the critics, because they weren’t remotely trendy and looking back nothing disfigured the music press more than a need for the superfluous, constantly overriding the search for anything genuinely haunting.

Moving on from the molten punk fury of The Pack, Theatre Of Hate had the mischievously stocky drums of Luke Rendle, and bare sax of John Boy alongside the loose guitar of none other than Billy Duffy and the sullen but fruity bass of Stan Stammers, with the corrupted cherub Kirk Brandon blaring over it all, frightening the horses. They released just the one official studio album in ‘Westworld’, alongside the vicarious ‘He Who Dares Wins (Live At The Warehouse Leeds)’ collection, and some classic singles, before eventually Kirk slid off into the more mature Spear Of Destiny. Ah, and what singles! ‘Original Sin’, ‘Rebel Without A Brain’, ‘Nero’, ‘Do You Believe In The Westworld?’, ‘The Hop’ and ‘Eastworld’

Further recordings have emerged of course, with a whole series of live and demo selections (‘Acts’ 1 – V) but it is this release which finally came out in 1998 that bears most examination because this would, in theory, have been the second album and it sounds like something you’d expect to hear now, a cross between morose Post-Punk and enchanting ambient sensibilities.

I doubt there has ever been a band capable of reaching such ferocious primal lunges who also included such wispy delicacies, so it’s no surprise to encounter ‘Ovature’ for a beginning, like some orchestrally-inclined jazz hybrid, plaintive and desolate, leading into the lilting, loping ‘Aria Of The Devil’ with its dusty swells and doldrums, a song walking bow-legged into the sunset, with a spacey end. ‘Dreams Of The Poppy’ comes out of a feral landscape, the bass pulsing, the sax squealing, Kirk shredding oxygen as the rhythm lurches, and Widow Brandon does his finest Dr Syn impersonation, as the Scarecrow rides again.

‘Omen Of The Times’ is softer, with wonderfully chiming guitar around the piquant melodic twister. The sly insinuations of ‘The Incinerator’ are probably familiar to many, a fluttering bastard of a song, it seems light, and precociously empty, as the guitar stays low as a drizzle, with the sax a haughty ghost, but it keeps bustling and scratching along, whereupon they bounce into the awesome ‘Nero’, probably my favourite 12” single of all time, a bit like having an open razor dragged down your privates. Kirk’s extended notes assault your sinuses as the bass walks saucily, and the sax undermines the foundations.

‘Americanos’ is a bit wobbly, as the old twangy guitar and jaunty campfire songs and conspiracy theories mesh behind the shrieking Kirk. From west to ‘Eastworld’ they spin, although as we enter a rheumatic Cossack spell it also sounds like Kirk is singing about Eastbourne, which isn’t quite so striking. ‘The Black Madonna’ works better with a truncated Burundi push, scalded vocals dripping over the shifting groundswell, with ‘Solution’ close to the fluid style Spear adopted, more all-embracing and cohesive, without the brittle highlights, closing an intriguing album which anybody familiar with more obvious releases would be a bit mental to miss out on.

The sound of a rickety rope bridge across an Indiana Jones style pit of Hell.

Devo to Make First Toronto Appearance in 25 Years, to Play Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo and Freedom of Choice in Their Entireties
Quote:

It's been announced that quintessential new wave punks Devo will make their first Toronto appearance in two and a half decades.

What's more, the helmet-wearing lads will play back-to-back shows at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, an 18,000-square-foot venue in Toronto's downtown core, on November 23 and 24.

But, wait, that's not all. Devo will treat the first night's crowd to a live rendition of their classic 1978 album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo, in its entirety; then should leave nerdy jaws agape again on the second night when they take on their 1980 album, Freedom of Choice, also in its entirety.

And, as if the pot needed to be sweetened any more, every online Ticketmaster purchase for the shows will include a downloadable link to three never-before-heard demo tracks of "Turn Around," "Red Shark" and, arguably the band's most infamous song, "Whip It!"

Tickets are $50 for each show and a limited amount of premium tickets have been made available, which include a meet-and-greet with the band, at the ripe price of $99.75. Tickets go on sale this Friday (September 18) at 10 a.m. and are available in Toronto at the Horsehoe Tavern, Rotate This!, Soundscape and through Ticketmaster.

So far this year, Devo have only played four shows — two in the UK and two in Texas. No word yet on any other North American dates on the Devo itinerary, but we bet more than a few of the helmet-headed minions will be making the trek up to Toronto to catch these two shows.
