Previous to becoming The Danse Society, it would take two
seperate bands in Barnsley, UK, by the names of '-Y?' and
'Lips-X', then Danse Crazy. -Y? was a punk outfit, while Lips-X
was just messing around with a 4 track and never played live.
-Y? only made one recorded contribution on the Sheffeild compilation
'Bouquet of Steel'.
The results of the merging of the two, Danse Crazy's first
gig was in Sheffeild at the Royal. They began recording (one
of their best) 'There is no Shame in Death' and played the
Futurama 2 Festival in Leeds with Soft Cell, also present
at the festival were Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie
and the Banshees, Wasted Youth, Altered Images, and U2!
After replacing the previous bassplayer with Tim Wright and
recording 'These Frayed Edges' the name change to Danse Society
was complete.
The Clock/Continent single was their debut DIY single, which
brought the band onto the scene with reviews in Melody Maker
and airplay by John Peel. A second pressing of Clock followed,
and manager Marcus Featherby produced the 12" for There
is No Shame in Death and the anti war compilation 'Wargasm'.
A Peel session produced the next single - 'Woman's Own', 'Belief',
and 'We're So Happy'.
At that point the band was living solely on gigging and the
dole, sleeping on floors and in vans, recording their debut
(mini) LP at a budget studio whilst crashing at their new
manager Jazz Lambeth's office. More airplay and press attention
followed. Though they were grouped with Southern
Death Cult, Sex
Gang Children, Brilliant,
and Blood
and Roses with the whole 'Positive-Punk' label, Danse
Society was a monster its own and never latched on to any
scene.
Frustrated with the seeming dead end of being an independant
band, they had no difficulty signing to Arista Records with
#2 slots in the Independant Single and Album charts. But with
signing to a major label, a degree of control and spirit was
lost, and the decline was in motion. After 'Heaven is Waiting',
there is one more self released LP as Danse Society, 'Looking
Through'; The Society was Steve Rawlings post Danse Society
dance music project.
In 2001, Anagram Records released 'Seduction - The Society
Collection', as part of it's Goth Collector Series. It included
a Society Records discography and detailed liner notes from
Lyndon Scarfe, reflecting some of the best and most imaginative
of the Danse Society.
