My Friends/John
Wayne
|
|
7" Fresh2, 1979
produced by
Steve Tannett
(Menace)
Their first single. Fresh records put it out - the label
that also held UK Decay
for a time, Play Dead,
and more classic punk bands that werent the average one chord
wonders. John Wayne is a more poppy british punk song about
the popular American war movie hero. Like The
Damned, they bring an element of humor and kitsch into
punk.

The Masque/War Zone

|
7" Fresh 46, 1981
Sticking with the "dark" side of things, "The
Masque" is another brooding punk anthem with a slight
gothic feel. Note that Sex Gang Children was still just someone's
wet dream at this point and the term gothic didn't apply to
music. Again, a popular vampire graces the cover - Bela Lugosi
(is Dead) as Dracula's hand. Stark black and red on the sleeve,
as in the previous single, establishes a spookier image for
the band.
The song "The Masque" allegedly is based on an
old Demon Preachers song, "Frankenstein".

CD Captain Oi!,
A complete collection of singles and the sole LP from The
Dark, a limited edition, unfortunately! Serves as a great
introduction to The Dark, or as a lifesaver to those who own
the vinyl. It's great to have this all in one place.
