MS: This Is the first time that we’re doing an interview together for deathrock.com, and I’m sure you’ve heard this first question many times before, but I’ve got to ask. Where does the name Joy Disaster come from? N: The name Joy Disaster comes from when we were trying to write some names, and we just chose Joy Disaster, because the mix of Joy and Disaster, it’s the kind of music we do, it matches with these kind of lyrics that I sing and play to. MS: And where do your lyrics come from? N: Our lyrics come from the world, myself, peoples problems that I know that I translate. F: Life! N: I always try to put the person that I use in my lyrics, I talk about a lot of people. MS: So is this person an abstract personality of yourself? N: Well I think that its not an abstract at all, because I don’t want to put myself in the spirit of this person, or what I can achieve myself. I just try to sing as the teller of the story. MS: Your lyrics are 100% in English? N: Yes MS: Would you do any lyrics in French at all? N: But, Franz and me have some experiences with our old band, and when I am singing in French, in French its difficult to have the melody to sing. And that’s why we choose English, because all the bands that we listen to are especially English for rock and roll music, and punk music. That’s why we choose it, because its more raw. MS: Would you ever do a song in french? N: We thought about it, but its not our way. But maybe one time. We shall see. MS: How are you received when you play in your own country? N: Nothing special about France because we don't play a lot here, sometimes in Paris and sometimes in our city "Nancy". We have a good audience in Nancy, because we have a couple of fans, our first fans, because we started there a few years ago but it's always the same by the end... just a good excuse to make a big party with friends but we really prefer to play in other countries... more exciting ! MS: Most of the time when you travel to your gigs, in Germany, Netherlands or something like that, you drive? JD: Sure. We only drive for the moment because it’s the best way we know. We always bring our stuff for the gigs, and that’s why we drive in the moment, but we have tour propositions for the east of Europe, and its very far. (were happy!) We cant bring everything on a flight, so Its not sure for the moment, we don’t prefer to fly. MS: Any particular reason that you dislike flights? JD: Especially because there are a couple of problems with flights, and we don’t want to have these problems. Lost baggage and equipment, extra costs, etc. It can be the same with driving, but flights are especially bad for us. But if we need to go very far, like to the USA, why not? Then we’ll think of flying! MS: So when your driving for 6-8 hours these drives can become very grueling or boring, how do you pass the time when you’re sitting in the car for that long? Do you have some strange stories of being on the road? JD: We have good memories from it all, There are a couple of experiences like when we played the gothic pogo party in Leipzig, we had a broken wheel so we stayed on the motorway for 3 hours waiting for the police! It was so strange but we had a good time because this time was crazy and we just laughed, “Its raining and were sitting here… Oh Fuck!” And we had driven all night to London with just one hour sleep. But its great, we are all tired at the beginning of the gig, and we played anyway, so OK! |
