'Big scratchy nasty waves of depression washing over
a beach of broken glass and shattered bone' is one way Of A Mesh
has been described accurately. Of A Mesh was just one of a number
of oft overlooked US deathrock bands of New York City from the early
to mid-80s. they managed to stick it out for most of the 80s releasing
a number of demos and vinyls.
Those that have heard of them have probably heard
'Guilotine', 'Life's Liquid, or 'Thorn'. But their live appearances
are said to have been another world compared to their vinyl output.
Still, Of A Mesh is one of the only early 80s deathrock / postpunk
bands from New York to put out more than a stray 7" or 12"
EP, though even those are rare finds. Fahrenheit 451 fared a little
better, while The
Plague and not many others also made vinyl appearances.
Their other peers survived (or met their demise) only
on demo tapes and live appearances. The
Naked and the Dead, The Kretins, Chop
Shop, Scarecrow, The
Ochrana and more bands made up the backbone of the typically
overlooked early 80s deathrock scene in NYC. Let this site introduce
you to a forgetten legend.
Violinist Samara Lubelski went on to be a part of the
more classical/ethereal gothic act The New Creatures (not to be confused
with Siouxsie's band 'The Creatures') for a time, but since then hasn't
been a part of the dark undergorund scene.
