RUDIMENTARY PENI: POPE ADRIAN the 37th PSYCHIATRIC

Pope Adrian the 37th (Psychristiatric) Poor Nick Blinko got thrown in the loony bin for being under the impression that he would assume the Papacy, and become Pope Adrian the 37th, the second English pope in history. The first, Nicholas Breakspeare, was also from Nick's hometown of Abbotts Langley, and became an idee fixe. Blinko's contributions, incidentally, were recorded during his stay in the hospital. The record is another concept album, this time dedicated to the delusions he was experiencing. There is a constant tape loop the entire duration of the album of Nick muttering, "Papus Adrianus". The songs are all sullen and hypnotic, and though mostly well-writtentend to drag on longer than seems necessary. After 5 or 6 complete verses, one wonders if the sing will end, and it doesn't. Some songs have lyrics 2-4 words long, repeated ad nauseum. Perhaps Nick's illness and heavy medication are to blame... But this is not to say that the album is crap. Indeed, some great musical ideas are presented here, with outstanding tracks such as Pope with No Name, Iron Lung, I'm a Dream, and a mournful ode to psychiatric medication, Pills Potions and Popes. Nick's voice, however, sounds listless- almost catatonic, but there are times when he sounds like his old self again, which are even more depressing. In the end, it is Grant's basslines which add the much-needed energy. A good record for bleeding to death to.
